Difference between classroom training and online training.
The reality is that there is no difference in subject matter between classroom H2S training and online H2S training. The benefit to online training is that it is more convenient, saves time, saves money, and is more interactive. The advantage of classroom training is that you can be fit tested upon completion of the training. The fit test is nice to get out of the way when you complete the training, but OSHA requires your fit test be performed in the respirator you are expected to wear, and we know from experience this is typically not the case, usually rendering the classroom fit test useless. Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is an incredibly dangerous and toxic chemical. H2S can and will deaden your sense of smell at low concentrations, and is colorless. For these reasons, there are no good warning signs to indicate the presence of Hydrogen Sulfide that you can rely on. Being exposed to Hydrogen Sulfide is only one portion of the danger H2S poses though. H2S is highly corrosive to materials like steel, and forms the explosive compounds Iron Sulfite and Iron pyrite scale which cause catastrophic failure of the materials. H2S is also by itself highly flammable; at just 4.3% H2S can be ignited at temperatures lower than 600 degrees Fahrenheit. To put this into perspective, the tip of a cigarette burns at roughly 700 degrees Fahrenheit. Hydrogen Sulfide poses high risk to whatever it comes into contact with, piping, equipment, and people.
